National Indian Youth Justice Academy

Building Pathways. Strengthening Nations. Preparing Future Leaders.

The National Indian Youth Justice Academy (NIYJA) is a nationally recognized, culturally grounded youth leadership program designed to introduce Indigenous youth to careers in public safety, justice, and community service. Through hands-on training, mentorship, and cultural connection, NIYJA prepares young people to become the next generation of leaders serving Tribal Nations and communities while protecting tribal sovereignty.

Our program blends professional instruction, experiential learning, and Indigenous values to create a powerful, life-changing experience.

Justice & Public Safety Career Pathways (Classroom)

Students participate in daily classroom sessions led by experienced professionals who serve in law enforcement, courts, fire services, emergency medical services, and victim advocacy. Instructors share their personal journeys and provide students with clear pathways for education, training, and career advancement.

Career exploration includes:

  • Law enforcement and criminal investigations (controlled substances, gangs, homicide, crime scene investigations)

  • Judicial and legal careers including judges, prosecutors, and defense attorneys

  • A mock court experience demonstrating how justice is carried out through collaboration

  • Firefighting and emergency medical services (EMS) career tracks

  • Victim services and advocacy, emphasizing compassion, accountability, and healing

Experiential Training & Professional Exposure (Hands-On)

NIYJA students train in real-world environments alongside professionals and observe live demonstrations from specialized units, including:

Students also use training simulators and experience the Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) to understand the responsibilities of emergency response professionals.

Fire service training includes hands-on experience with equipment, fire engines, and high-pressure hoses. EMTs teach and supervise students in basic first aid and life-saving skills, reinforcing the responsibility to serve others in moments of crisis.

Daily physical training (PT) builds discipline, teamwork, and resilience. Near the end of the Academy, students may choose to attempt the official police and fire academy PT test, reinforcing confidence and goal setting.
