BIOGRAPHY
Steven Juneau is President/CEO of the National Native Justice Institute, a non-profit company dedicated to supporting public safety throughout Indian Country. Mr. Juneau spent more than three decades serving in many roles in the Bureau of Indian Affairs - Office of Justice Services (BIA-OJS) before retiring in August 2023.
Prior to his retirement, he served as the Acting Director for BIA-Office of Justice Services, leading the 900+ personnel federal agency to uphold public safety and tribal sovereignty throughout Indian Country. He served as Commissioner on the joint DOJ-DOI Secretarial Commission on Missing Persons—a Presidential Priority—and led the revision of the MOU with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which had a national criminal investigation impact for all Native American Tribes.
Prior to serving as Acting Director, Mr. Juneau served as the Associate Director for Professional Standards Directorate leading national training, policy, recruitment, retention, inspections, and cultural investigations. He also served as the Academy Director of the United States Indian Police Academy and developed the bureau’s first Advanced Training Center in North Dakota and Command Schools.
Mr. Juneau’s extensive leadership history includes serving as the Deputy Associate Director in Washington, DC, and Special Agent in Charge for the Phoenix (AZ) and Billings (MT) Districts. He is an enrolled member of the Tlingit and Haida Tribes of Alaska and a descendant of the Blackfeet Nation of Montana, where he began his law enforcement career in 1987 as a tribal police officer.
He is a veteran of the United States Army and a graduate of the United States Indian Police Academy, FLETC Leadership Institute, FBI National Academy (200th Session), Department of Interior Executive Leadership, and the Harvard Kennedy School Executive Program.
